Tire warranties: read past the mileage number

Compare the actual coverage and installed cost before calling one tire a better deal.

The useful answerA mileage warranty is conditional coverage, not guaranteed life or a promise of a free replacement. Read the terms for the exact tire and compare the complete installed price.

Separate the kinds of coverage

Materials-and-workmanship coverage, treadwear coverage, a trial period and road-hazard protection address different events. Some come from the manufacturer; others are sold by the retailer. Ask who handles a claim and which records are required.

Proration, exclusions and replacement costs can change the outcome. The mileage number on a product card is only a starting point.

Compare the complete ownership plan

Write down the tire price, installation, balancing, disposal, TPMS service, tax and any protection plan. Ask whether rotations are included and whether that service is convenient to use.

A short ownership period and years of high-mileage driving can justify different priorities. Keep invoices and maintenance records either way.

Common questions

Does 80,000-mile coverage guarantee 80,000 miles of use?

No. Actual service life and any claim depend on wear, conditions, maintenance and the applicable terms.
